R ome's candidacy is a strong one because the City manages to merge the ancient and the modern, the historical and the technological, making it the ideal site for writing the first pages of the history of the Olympics in the third millennium. This is the spirit in which Rome 2004 is preparing its candidacy. After a year and a half of work, and thanks to the contributions of some of our country's leading scientific institutions, we have drawn up a dossier which was presented to the IOC at its Lausanne offices on August 12th 1996, making us the first candidate city to have completed this task.

The dossier offers, first of all, an in-depth look at the City and its citizens, including urban-planning and transportation issues, weather and ecological conditions, and tourist and accommodations, not to mention its health-care system and security, wich are to be handled directly by the Ministry of Interior. Good part of the dossier focuses on the specific questions regarding the sporting events: the state of existing facilities, the construction of an Olympic Village, the possibility of creating the necessary connecting infrastructures as well as those required to house the mass media. The study and research effort has been divided into 19 different chapters, which, should Rome be selected to host the Olympic Games of 2004, would help improve both the appearance of the City and the quality of life.
